FX’s Japanese Epic Wins 18 Awards, Making History at the 76th Emmy Awards

"Shogun" Breaks Emmy Records, Wins Best Drama as "Hacks" and "Baby Reindeer" Also Shine at 2024 Awards The 2024 Emmy Awards saw FX’s historical epic “Shogun” dominate the night, breaking the record for the most Emmy wins by a single show in one season. The Japanese-set drama scooped an astounding 18 awards, including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series, marking the first time a non-English-language series has won the top prize in this category.

The previous record for most Emmy wins in a season was 13, held by mini-series “John Adams” in 2008 and “Game of Thrones” in 2015 and 2016.

Hiroyuki Sanada, the star of “Shogun,” made history as the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy, taking home the Lead Actor in a Drama award. Co-star Anna Sawai followed suit, claiming the Lead Actress in a Drama trophy. The series, which revolves around warring dynasties in feudal Japan, was highly praised for its authentic storytelling and impressive cast.

The showrunner, Justin Marks, acknowledged the effort put into the production, thanking the team for taking on “a very expensive, subtitled, Japanese period piece, whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition.” Marks added that the show’s success highlights the beauty of translation and cultural exchange.

“Hacks”, starring Jean Smart as a diva comedienne, took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award in a surprise win, beating out hot favorite “The Bear.” Smart earned her third Lead Actress in a Comedy Emmy, adding a humorous note in her acceptance speech: “I appreciate this, because I just don’t get enough attention.”

Despite losing the top comedy prize, “The Bear” still secured 11 wins, including Lead Actor in a Comedy for Jeremy Allen White and Supporting Actor for Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Co-star Liza Colon-Zayas also stunned the audience by winning Supporting Actress in a comedy, beating out heavyweights like Meryl Streep.

Another standout of the night was Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” which won Outstanding Limited Series. The show, based on Scottish comedian Richard Gadd’s one-man performance about his experience with sexual abuse, received critical acclaim. Gadd took home the Lead Actor in a Limited Series award, while Jessica Gunning won Supporting Actress.

Jodie Foster earned her first Emmy with a Lead Actress in a Limited Series win for her role in “True Detective: Night Country.”
