Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate and a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed his desire to become the President of the Senate. During a press briefing on Tuesday, Senator Kalu said that he is the most suitable candidate for the position and called on Nigerians to support his bid.
In his address, Senator Kalu emphasized his commitment to serving the Nigerian people and referenced his 24 years as a governor, during which he has kept the same phone number. He promised that he would not switch off his phone even if he becomes Senate President and urged Nigerians to pray for him to win the election.
Senator Kalu’s bid for the presidency of the Senate comes after he was declared the winner of the Abia North Senatorial district election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to the electoral body, Senator Kalu received 30,805 votes, defeating his closest rival, Nnamdi Iroh of the Labour Party, who received 25,540 votes, and Chief Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received 15,175 votes.
The returning officer for Abia-North, Mr Chinedu Nnamdi, declared Senator Kalu the winner, having received the highest number of valid votes cast. Senator Kalu’s bid for the presidency of the Senate is expected to generate significant interest and debate in the coming weeks, as the APC considers its options for filling the position.
