In an interview with newsmen on Monday at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Onueke, Ebonyi, Governor Umahi explained that he discussed his bid for the Senate presidency with Tinubu during his visit to Paris, and was invited to a meeting with the President-elect on his return to Nigeria.

Umahi stated that he accepted Tinubu’s request in the interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the South-East zone, where he hails from.

“I discussed the issue with the President-elect when he was in Paris and he invited me on his return to the country.

“It was an honor to be invited by Tinubu and he told me that he had made commitments. It is his right as the President-elect to make commitments and anyone running for such an office makes promises.

“So I accepted because I did not want to be a clog in the wheel of his progress.”

Speaking on his withdrawal, he said, “Politics is all about dialogue, give and take, we cannot continue opposing everything.

“Considering our efforts to promote the All Progressives Congress, APC, the South-East zone will get a tangible position,” he said.

The Senate presidency is a highly coveted position in Nigerian politics, with the holder of the office being the third-highest ranking official in the country after the President and Vice President.

The APC is currently the ruling party in Nigeria, and with Tinubu set to take office as President in the coming months, the party is expected to make significant changes to the country’s political landscape.
