The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced its adoption of Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party. The decision was made and documented in a communiqué that was co-signed by the Party’s National Chairman, Chief Supo Shonibare and National Secretary, Hon. Saleh Dass, following the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held on February 22, 2023, in Abuja.

The NWC reviewed the Senator Ebenezer Ikeyina Committee’s report, which investigated allegations that some of the party’s leaders from Oyo State had issued a statement supporting a candidate other than Peter Obi from the Labour Party. The NWC approved the disciplinary measures recommended by the Ikeyina Committee and suspended the involved leaders. If the leaders object to the decision, they can appeal to the NWC through the National Secretary of the Party.

The SDP reiterated its endorsement of Peter Obi and Dr. Yusuf Baba-Ahmed Datti, the Vice Presidential candidate, for the Presidency and Vice Presidency respectively. The decision was based on a review of both internal and external factors, as well as the party’s earlier determination to support an opposition candidate in the Presidential elections. The party urges its members and all Nigerians who seek a stable, inclusive, and forward-looking polity to vote for the Labour Party in the Presidential elections scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2023.
