Villarreal’s Nigerian import, Samuel Chukwueze, has been named the La Liga Best African Player for the 2022/2023 season. The Super Eagle earned this prestigious accolade based on his exceptional performance throughout the season with Villarreal, where he played 37 matches and started 27 of them.

Villarreal expressed their delight at Chukwueze’s achievement, stating, “Samu is now enjoying his well-deserved award, after being voted by more than 30,000 fans and 26 journalists from the continent, ahead of other top African players such as Yassine Bono, Iñaki Williams, and Youssef En-Nesyri, among others.”

Chukwueze emerged victorious over Iñaki Williams, the record-breaking forward from Athletic Club, who scored 10 goals in 36 La Liga matches this season and set an incredible record of making 251 consecutive La Liga appearances for the Basque side over seven seasons.

The competition also included last season’s inaugural La Liga African MVP Award winner, Bounou, whose penalty shootout heroics against AS Roma led Sevilla FC to another UEFA Europa League title, their seventh, and marked the Moroccan goalkeeper’s second with the club.

However, it was Chukwueze who claimed the La Liga African MVP Award for this season. The Nigerian international proved to be a constant attacking threat for Villarreal CF and showcased his brilliant skills after recovering from a frustrating injury layoff. His 155 dribbles placed him among the top three in La Liga this season, solidifying his reputation as one of the most exciting players to watch in the league, according to the club.

Chukwueze’s exceptional contributions to Villarreal’s success have been duly recognized, and this award is a testament to his outstanding performances on the pitch throughout the 2022/2023 La Liga season.
