Nobody’s Favorite
Song by Rick Ross Featured artist: GunPlay Produced by Trop Album: Port of Miami II Released: 8 August 2019
In an era of music where artists fear “falling off” and being forgotten about without making releases yearly, Rick Ross has shown that career artists still, in fact, do exist.
He is an anomaly by the way in which he has continually only released albums every couple of years – rather than multiple releases in the same year. Despite his limited releases compared to other artists such as Drake, who make releases yearly keeping their name in the public eye, Ross’ consistency in being at the top of his game has remained throughout his career. Ross still retains his ability to contend with the new names in rap, despite releasing his debut album Port of Miami over 13 years ago.
However, even though Ross has shown consistency, he personally feels that he has never been ‘nobody’s favorite.’ Big names such as Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, Kanye West continue to dominate people’s decisions as to which is their favorite artist when it comes to rap – yet a slim few only give Ross his credit for being their favorite rapper.
On Meek Mill’s 2018 song “What’s Free?” which Ross was featured on, he referenced the same phrase when he rapped:
Over a decade and never nobody’s favorite
