In a shocking turn of events, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has vehemently denounced the assault on a police officer by the renowned musician Seun Kuti. The commission expressed its admiration for the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, for his swift response in ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of Seun Kuti. The incident has gravely undermined the sanctity of the Nigerian nation’s symbol of authority.
Ikechukwu Ani, the spokesman for the Police Service Commission, released a statement affirming the commission’s demand for the immediate arraignment of Seun Kuti. The PSC further urged the Inspector General to ensure that the case is pursued to its logical conclusion. By doing so, public confidence in the Nigeria Police as the primary agency responsible for internal security, maintenance of law and order, as well as the protection of lives and property, can be restored.
Dr. Solomon Arase, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former Inspector General of Police, expressed his dismay at the audacity of Seun Kuti in assaulting a police officer who was in uniform and carrying out official duties. Dr. Arase emphasized that regardless of any potential offense committed by the police officer, no individual, including Seun Kuti, possesses the right to lay hands on a law enforcement official.
Dr. Arase vehemently rejected the notion that Nigeria is a Hobbesian state where might reigns supreme. He stated, “As a civilized people, we must utilize established channels for lodging complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement officials, rather than resorting to uncivilized behavior like assaulting the symbol of authority in our country.”
He further called for the prompt prosecution of Seun Kuti as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar actions. The PSC Chairman also praised the police officer for displaying remarkable restraint and not retaliating against his assailant, noting that the consequences could have been far more severe.
Dr. Arase expressed his disappointment that while the management of the Nigeria Police Force is actively addressing officers who engage in harassment, intimidation, or assault of civilians on the roads and in workplaces, these same officers are now falling victim to the actions of ill-mannered elites.
The Chairman emphasized that the present incident should serve as an example, making it clear that such behavior will never be tolerated in Nigeria—a country governed by laws, rules, and regulations. Dr. Arase underscored the overwhelming public opinion against the assault, highlighting the love and respect Nigerians have for law enforcement officers. He stressed the importance of all police officers respecting the rights of the people and maintaining professionalism in their conduct at all times.
The Police Service Commission’s strong condemnation of the assault on a police officer by Seun Kuti reflects the commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those responsible for such acts are brought to justice. The incident serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and the Nigerian people’s trust in their law enforcement agencies must be upheld and protected.
