The Enugu State Police Command has reported a significant victory in its ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities in the region.
In a recent operation, the police successfully neutralized three operatives of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a group associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and recovered a cache of weapons.
The announcement was made by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, in a statement released on Friday. The operation, which took place on Thursday, involved a combined team of police Special Forces and officers from the Igbo-Eze North Police Division. The targeted location was a camp situated in the Imufu area of the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.
According to Ndukwe, the confrontation with the criminal elements resulted in a fierce gun battle, leading to the elimination of three of the hoodlums. Several others managed to escape but sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire.
The recovered items from the scene of the operation were listed in the statement as follows: four pump-action guns, a locally fabricated revolver gun, a pistol, 67 live cartridges, military camouflage uniforms, fabrics featuring IPOB insignia, items suspected to be amulets and various other incriminating materials.
Preliminary investigations have also linked the neutralized criminals to previous acts of violence. Ndukwe revealed that these elements were responsible for the fatal shooting of two security personnel from the Neighbourhood Watch Group on July 21, 2023, at approximately 1 a.m.
The incident occurred in Umuagama within the Enugu-Ezike community of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. The criminals had also attempted to enforce an illegal sit-at-home order in certain parts of the council.
In response to the successful operation, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Ammani reiterated the Enugu State Police Command’s commitment to eradicating unrepentant criminals from the state. He praised the operatives for their strategic execution of the raid.
Ndukwe conveyed the commissioner’s message urging police officers to remain resolute and unyielding in their efforts. He also sought continued support from the citizens of Enugu State to collectively eliminate criminal elements from society.
In a bid to enhance community involvement, Ndukwe concluded the statement with a request to the residents of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area and medical facility owners. He urged them to promptly report any individuals found with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s emergency hotlines at 08032003702, 08075380883, 08086671202, or 08098880172.
