Nigerian-American Racer Becomes First American Winner in Over Four Decades, Inspiring a Generation
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated 17-year-old Nigerian-American motorsport prodigy Ugo Orlandi on his historic victory at the 71st Macau Grand Prix. The win crowns Orlandi as the 2024 FIA Formula Regional (FR) World Cup champion and marks the first time in over 40 years that an American driver has claimed the prestigious title.
A Historic Triumph
Orlandi’s win on November 17 saw him dominate the Macau Grand Prix from start to finish, representing R-ace GP. Olivier Goethe of MP Motorsport and Noel León of KCMG IXO by Pinnacle Motorsport finished second and third, respectively.
The young racer’s achievement is a milestone not only in motorsport history but also for his cultural heritage. Orlandi, the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi and Italian former fashion designer Luca Orlandi, has quickly become a symbol of global talent and determination.
Obi Applauds Talent and Dedication
In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi praised Orlandi’s exceptional performance, highlighting the inspiration it brings to young Nigerians.
“Ugo’s outstanding victory stands as a testament to his immense talent, hard work, and consistent dedication—qualities that our youth today can demonstrate when given the right support and guidance,” Obi said.
Obi underscored the broader significance of Orlandi’s success, describing it as a beacon of hope and possibility for young Nigerians.
“His success serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians everywhere, illustrating the boundless potential that can be realized when passion is paired with opportunity,” he added.
McLaren’s Role in Developing Orlandi
Obi also commended McLaren Racing for recognizing Orlandi’s talent early on and investing in his development.
“I must also commend McLaren for their foresight in recognising Ugo’s potential and for their ongoing commitment to developing young talent. Their support underscores the critical role of nurturing ambition and investing in the future,” Obi remarked.
A Rising Star
Orlandi’s ascent in motorsport has captivated fans worldwide, with his victory further cementing his place as a rising star. Obi concluded his statement by expressing confidence in the driver’s bright future.
“Ugo, beyond making history—you have inspired millions. I look forward to witnessing your continued rise as you push the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsport. Congratulations once more, Ugo.”
