Kely Nescimento, daughter of the legendary Brazilian footballer Pele, revealed that her father wished for Lionel Messi to win the 2022 World Cup after Brazil’s loss to Croatia in the quarterfinals.

Despite Brazil’s elimination, Pele wanted a fellow all-time great to capture the trophy that he had won three times during his remarkable career.

Messi inspired Argentina to a memorable triumph, prevailing in a penalty shootout at the end of an epic final clash with France. Nescimento said that she passed on her father’s best wishes to Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, during a party.

Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970, was unable to watch the 2022 World Cup final, but he was happy to hear the news that Messi had lifted the cup.

Pele’s love for football was not just about Brazil winning, but the possibility of any team being able to win, as he would always say was what he loved about the beautiful game.

Pele took in 92 appearances for his country, scoring 77 goals and is regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time.
