According to recent reports, human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has urged the Nigerian government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, to immediately release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Ozekhome noted that the self-determination struggle of IPOB is legally guaranteed in accordance with Nigerian laws.
The lawyer made this appeal during his keynote address at the Handshake Across The Niger II, which was held in Enugu on Friday.
Ozekhome also pointed out that Nnamdi Kanu’s health is deteriorating and the Department of State Services (DSS) doctors have confirmed that he is not well. Despite this, the government has denied him access to his personal doctor. The case has been adjourned until May 11, and Ozekhome has called on the Supreme Court to do the right thing.
In a plea directed towards the President, Ozekhome beseeched him to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu through the Attorney General of the Federation, who has the power to discontinue the case. Ozekhome stressed that the government doesn’t have to wait for the Supreme Court decision to do what is right. He urged the President to act immediately and not allow Nnamdi Kanu’s health to deteriorate any further.
It is important to note that the call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release is not a new one. Several human rights groups and activists have been demanding his release for quite some time. It remains to be seen whether the government will take any action in response to this plea.
