In response to the recent lifting of the ban on the Egungun festival by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, the Oyo State Police Command has taken action to ensure the safety and security of lives and properties in the state capital, Ibadan, and its surrounding areas.
The Tribune Online has reported that Oba Balogun suspended the festival activities a few weeks ago following incidents of violence in some areas. However, after a meeting with Alagbaas and other stakeholders, the ban was subsequently lifted, allowing for the continuation of the traditional event.
To ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration, the Command has issued a statement through its Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, assuring residents of maximum protection. The statement stated, “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it has concluded plans to effectively secure residents and law-abiding citizens following the ‘Suspension-lift order’ on the Annual Egungun Festivities by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Sen. Lekan Balogun, CFR, Alli Okunmade II.”
The security measures are set to take effect from Monday, July 24, 2023, and will focus on maintaining law and order during the upcoming phase of the Egungun processions and beyond the festivities.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Adebola Hamzat, has ordered the immediate deployment and utilization of the Command’s operational, intelligence, and tactical assets to ensure the overall success of the event.
Residents in the area will witness increased security presence, including high-octane patrols, intelligence-led stop and search operations, and technology-enhanced surveillance duties during the build-up to the commencement of the next phase of the festivities.
While encouraging the public to go about their lawful activities without fear, the Oyo State Police Command sternly warns against any actions that may disrupt the relative tranquility enjoyed in the State. The Command also calls on parents, guardians, and influential members of society to counsel their children and wards against being manipulated by criminal elements to cause disruptions and create panic during the processions.
The statement issued a strong warning to potential troublemakers, stating that heavy sanctions will be imposed on anyone found culpable, in accordance with relevant laws.
With these security measures in place, the Oyo State Police Command aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration of the Egungun festival, fostering an environment of peace and harmony throughout the festivities. Residents are urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any suspicious activities to ensure a successful and incident-free event.
