Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been cleared of any involvement in the controversial new sports levy regime imposed on Nigerian Police personnel. The Force headquarters in Abuja released a statement through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, titled “NPF Sports Levy Publication: Mischievous Attempt to Rubbish Police Integrity and Tradition.” The statement vehemently refuted claims that the Acting IGP had any role in the increase in deductions.
The Nigeria Police Force addressed the dissemination of false information by certain media outlets, labeling the claims as baseless and misleading. The Force expressed its concern that these reports were calculated to deceive the public and tarnish its integrity. While not intending to dignify the unprofessionalism and falsehood of these media outlets, the statement stressed the need to correct the misleading news publication targeting the person and integrity of Acting IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun regarding the Police Annual Sports Levy deduction.
The statement clarified that the Nigeria Police Force Sports has long been funded through an annual deduction, a practice that has been in place for many years. This deduction was consolidated in 2003 and reviewed by the Force’s management in 2012. Importantly, it was emphasized that the deduction attributed to the Acting IGP was approved prior to his appointment, making it evident that he had no involvement in its implementation.
The Force accused the purveyors of the false information of being determined to mislead the public by distorting the truth and creating unnecessary mischief. It strongly urged both the public and media outlets to verify information before spreading baseless claims that could tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement concluded by calling on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the malicious publication.
With this clarification from the Force headquarters, it is now evident that Acting IGP Kayode Egbetokun had no part in the decision to increase the sports levy deductions for Nigerian Police personnel. The public is urged to exercise caution and verify information before accepting sensationalized news reports that aim to mislead and discredit the integrity of the Force.
