The Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IG), Alkali Usman, has established an Election Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Team to guarantee the successful deployment of police personnel before, during, and after the elections.
This team, led by AIG Garba Baba Umar, the Vice President of INTERPOL and Head of the National Crime Bureau, will be made up of experienced police officers from all over the country who possess extensive knowledge in election security management.
The team’s objectives are to detect, assess, and address potential threats, as well as conduct evaluations of the security arrangements in advance of the 2023 general elections. The establishment of this team is part of the IG’s efforts to ensure that the elections are conducted safely, securely, and with credibility.
The National Coordinator of the team, AIG Garba Baba Umar, will be assisted by other members including the Force Secretary, AIG Habu Sani, CP Election Monitoring, CP Basil Idegwu, and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The team will also include seven Commissioners of Police, 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police, 30 Chief Superintendents of Police, and 16 Strategic Officers of various ranks.
The IG has stressed the importance of ensuring the elections are secure and in line with global best practices. The team has been tasked with proper deployment, real-time coverage of the electoral process, and protection against any hostile external or internal influences through the use of INTERPOL, anti-cybercrime measures, and the intelligence tools and assets of the Nigeria Police Force.
In addition, the IG has confirmed the existence and effectiveness of Electoral Offences Desks located at State Criminal Investigation Departments in all commands across the country. These desks are headed by the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of the SCID.
