The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum to address the issue of fuel and naira scarcity in the country.
The NLC has said that it will direct its members to stay away from workplaces and mobilize for mass actions if the issues persist. Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, made the announcement during a briefing at Labour House, Abuja. Ajaero stated that Nigerians, especially workers, have been pushed to the wall and can no longer keep quiet.
Ajaero also addressed the issue of cash crunch, saying that the NLC is giving the federal government and relevant agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and other banking institutions, seven working days to address the issue. If the issue is not resolved within the seven days, the NLC will direct all workers in the country to stay at home.
On the issue of fuel scarcity, Ajaero stated that the NLC will no longer keep quiet on the issue of perennial fuel scarcity and arbitrary increases on petroleum. He also accused some state governors of interfering in the affairs of organized labor and threatened that economic activities in the state would be paralyzed for a long time if the state governor did not stay clear of the congress’ affairs in the state.
Ajaero also mentioned the destruction of the NLC state secretariat in Imo State and the interference of state governors in the State Council elections. He warned that the industrial action that they started in Imo State will be doubled in the coming days, and the CWC is being put on notice about what will befall the state unless the right thing is done.
