According to the recently released Global Firepower Index report, the Nigerian military is currently ranked 36th in the world and fourth in Africa. This represents a drop of one place compared to its 2022 ranking, and a drop from third to fourth on the continent.

The United States of America’s military is ranked first in the world, followed by Russia in second place and China in third. India is ranked fourth, with the United Kingdom in fifth place. South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, France, and Italy round out the top ten.

In Africa, Egypt is ranked number one and 14th in the world, followed by Algeria in second place at 26th in the world. South Africa is ranked 33rd in the world to emerge third on the continent.

The Global Firepower ranking uses over 60 individual factors to determine a given nation’s Power Index (‘PwrIndx’) score, ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography. For 2023, Nigeria has a PwrIndx score of 0.5587, placing it 36th out of 145 countries considered for the annual GFP review.
