2023 WASSCE Scandal: WAEC's Decision Day Arrives
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to deliberate on the numerous cases of malpractice and irregularities that marred the administration of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). This announcement follows a previous revelation made by the former WAEC boss, Mr. Patrick Areghan, during the announcement of the WASSCE results in August.
Mr. Patrick Areghan, during the release of the results, disclosed that a staggering 263,803 results had been withheld due to various instances of malpractice and irregularities. In a statement, he said, “On behalf of the Registrar to Council, the Management and Staff of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, Nigeria, I welcome you to this press briefing to announce the release of the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for school candidates, 2023 in Nigeria. Out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates that sat for the examination, the results of 262,803 candidates are being withheld due to reports of cases of examination malpractice.”
In an official announcement posted on the council’s social media handle, WAEC revealed that the decision regarding the withheld results would be reached during the 76th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC). This committee is tasked with considering and deciding on the malpractice and irregularity cases that emerged from the conduct of the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates. The meeting is scheduled to commence today, and it is expected to address the issues surrounding the withheld results, providing clarity to concerned students and stakeholders.
The examination malpractice and irregularities have raised significant concerns among candidates and educational authorities in West Africa. The outcomes of the NEC’s deliberations will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the affected candidates and the credibility of the examination process.
