After having the good time-out with the new “13 Reasons Why” movie, we left in trance as to what next? Should we have a season 2 or not? Netflix created something iconic out of the original story and we can’t help but fantasize how technology has come to play in the remake.
“13 Reasons Why” is based on the best-selling books by Jay Asher following Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returned home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch.
Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? 13 Reasons Why comes from executive producers Tom McCarthy, Brian Yorkey, Selena Gomez, Joy Gorman and Kristel Laiblin.
When translating the story from book to television, a handful of changes were made, including those relating to technology. A lot has changed from 2007 with regards to technology and how we use it: the first iPhone model launched in 2007, social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat did not exist, and cassette tapes are practically obsolete now.
You’re also probably asking yourself if this amazing Netflix series will be a standalone piece, or if there’s room for a Season 2. Here at Screener, we’re of two minds about it.
Obviously we want more of this story and more of these characters and their turbulent lives, especially after the way the series ended. On the other hand, we have to ask ourselves if that would truly be the best way to serve Hannah (Katherine Langford) and Clay’s (Dylan Minnette) story.
