Joseph Aloba Expresses Outrage Over Exploitation of Mohbad’s Memory During One-Year Anniversary
Joseph Aloba, the father of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, has spoken out against those he believes are attempting to profit from his son’s tragic death. Speaking to reporters on September 11, 2024, following a court hearing regarding Mohbad’s passing, Aloba expressed his frustration and sorrow, particularly ahead of the first anniversary of his son’s death.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His father lamented how some individuals are using his son’s memory for financial gain instead of focusing on justice and remembrance.
In a video message, Mohbad’s father said, “Some people want to use the death of a 26-year-old to make money. When I pass and his song is playing, I shed tears. So if somebody has decided that his death anniversary is an opportunity for them to make money, they and their family will suffer from leprosy.” He continued, “This is the time to remember that it has been one year, and we still haven’t gotten justice.”
Aloba’s comments come as emotions run high with the approach of Mohbad’s one-year memorial. He expressed deep sorrow, stating that he still cries whenever he hears his son’s songs, and he emphasized that the focus should be on justice rather than exploitation.
Tributes Pour in for Mohbad
Meanwhile, popular skit maker Cute Abiola paid tribute to Mohbad on the one-year anniversary of his death. Sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram, Abiola reflected on the lasting impact of Mohbad’s music and legacy. In his tribute, he posted a video of Mohbad in a church, where the late singer expressed gratitude to God and reflected on his life. The emotional post was captioned, “A year ago, rest on, legend,” honoring the memory of the late artist.
Calls for Justice Continue
Mohbad’s passing sparked a wave of controversy, with fans and family calling for answers regarding the true cause of his death. Despite an autopsy, police investigations, and multiple court hearings, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unresolved.
Before his death, Mohbad had publicly spoken about facing challenges, including conflicts with his former record label boss, Azeez Fashola (Naira Marley), and personal struggles within his family. In his music, particularly in his song “Peace,” he touched on themes of overcoming adversity and finding solace amid betrayal.
As the one-year anniversary of Mohbad’s passing is marked by tributes and reflections, his father continues to call for justice, urging the public to honor his son’s memory without seeking personal gain.
