Mavin Records artist Crayon has shared his personal struggles with mental health and addiction in the Nigerian music industry, revealing a challenging period in his career that nearly led him to quit music. In an interview with Korty, Crayon detailed the immense pressures he faced after releasing six songs in 2020 that failed to meet expectations, which severely impacted his mental health.
Crayon opened up about his substance abuse issues, admitting he was addicted to a dangerous combination of Codeine, Marijuana, Tramadol, and Skuchies—a potent mix of various drugs. The turning point came when a close friend nearly died from a Tramadol overdose, prompting Crayon and his friends to reassess their lifestyle choices.
Reflecting on his struggles, Crayon said, “If you’re an artist, and you want to come into the industry, Omo, if you know say you no get strong mental health, no enter o!”
He recounted the breaking point when he walked barefoot to Mavin Records, smashed his phone in frustration, and seriously considered quitting music altogether. His erratic behavior raised alarm among his peers, prompting Mavin star Rema and others to intervene. Crayon said Rema rushed to his side, providing emotional support when he was at his lowest.
Crayon shared that he was taken to a psychiatric hospital in Lekki for professional help, which was a pivotal moment in his recovery. “I couldn’t talk. I literally lost my mind. Fighting wars that nobody can see, only you,” he explained, describing the intensity of his mental health battle.
