Mariam Eniola Bolaji has etched her name in history by becoming the first African athlete to win a medal in para-badminton at the Paralympics. She claimed the Bronze in the women’s SL3 singles at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, marking a significant achievement for Nigeria.

Bolaji’s outstanding performance saw her defeat Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna in straight sets, 2-0 (21-9, 21-9), securing Nigeria’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and ending a long-standing medal drought for the nation.

Her historic journey began in the group stages, where she became the first African to win a badminton match at the Paralympics. Her victories, including a crucial win against Australia’s Celine Aurelie Vinot, paved the way for her success.

Bolaji continued to impress in the quarterfinals with a decisive straight-set victory over India’s Mandeep Kaur. Her only setback came against China’s Zuxian Xiao, who went on to win the GOLD medal. Despite this, Bolaji’s remarkable achievement has made her a trailblazer in African sports.
