Manchester United has parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the season that has left the once-dominant club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. The decision, announced on Monday, comes after United’s disappointing 1-0 loss to West Ham on Sunday, which marked their fourth defeat in just nine league games. The team has now managed only one victory in its last eight matches across all competitions.

A statement from Manchester United confirmed Ten Hag’s departure, noting, “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the club as Ten Hag’s assistant in July, has been appointed interim manager until a permanent replacement is found. The former United striker’s appointment as a temporary solution comes as the club navigates a turbulent start to the season, a situation that has reignited concerns about the overall direction of the team.

Even prior to Sunday’s defeat, Ten Hag was already facing mounting pressure. This season’s shaky beginning has been Manchester United’s worst in the English top flight since 1989/90. United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had initially stood by Ten Hag after an internal review of his performance at the end of last season, which saw the club finish in eighth place. The Dutchman even received a contract extension, securing his role until June 2026 after a surprising FA Cup final victory over local rivals Manchester City in May.

Despite some early successes, Ten Hag struggled to resolve the squad’s underlying issues, including injuries, underwhelming performances from expensive signings, and a lack of tactical coherence. United’s Champions League campaign ended in the group stage after losses to Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen, while domestic defeats to teams like Bournemouth, Brighton, and Fulham further highlighted the team’s struggles.

Ten Hag’s tenure began with promise. After his appointment in April 2022, he steered United to a League Cup title in 2023, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought with a victory over Newcastle. He also led the team to an FA Cup final and a third-place finish in the league, marking a successful debut season. However, hopes that these achievements could spur a long-term turnaround were quickly dashed as United’s form crumbled this season, with high-profile losses to Liverpool and Tottenham at Old Trafford.

The club’s off-field changes, led by Ratcliffe, have also added to the challenges. A new sporting structure was introduced, involving the hiring of a chief executive, sporting director, and technical director, indicating a shift towards more strategic management. However, Ten Hag’s unexpected FA Cup triumph against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City ultimately provided only a temporary reprieve.

Manchester United’s troubles have persisted since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Since then, the club has seen five permanent managers dismissed, none of whom managed to restore the consistent success seen under Ferguson’s 13 Premier League title-winning years.
