According to a source close to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Lionel Messi is much more likely to leave the club at the end of the current season than to sign a new deal. The source stated that the dynamics surrounding the situation have shifted, and PSG is now less motivated to renew Messi’s contract. They clarified that there is currently no deal in place for Messi to exit PSG, but it is more likely than a contract renewal.

Messi, who is a World Cup winner, joined PSG in 2021 on a two-year deal which is set to expire at the end of this campaign. The 35-year-old Argentine has made 67 appearances for the club in all competitions and has scored 29 goals while setting up 32 more.

The chances of Messi’s contract being renewed have been impacted by the fans, as some PSG fans jeered his name during the teams’ announcement before the 1-0 home defeat against Lyon on Sunday.

Barcelona has been openly pursuing Messi in hopes of bringing him back to the Camp Nou, two years after he left the club where he won four Champions League titles. The club was unable to renew his contract at the time, leading to his departure.

The vice-president of Barcelona, Rafael Yuste, recently stated that he would love for Messi to return and confirmed that there had been contact between the two parties. Messi has also been linked with a possible move to Major League Soccer, with Inter Miami reportedly interested in signing him.
