The Lagos state government says that the 50% reduction in fares for buses owned by the state will be discontinued.
This decision was made public through a statement released on Tuesday by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
The initial reduction in fares was announced by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on February 8, as part of his administration’s effort to alleviate the suffering of Lagos residents during the petrol and cash scarcity period.
In addition to the fare reduction, Sanwo-Olu also announced the establishment of food banks in various locations across the state to provide relief for vulnerable residents.
However, in the statement released by LAMATA, it was announced that fares for state-owned buses will return to their original 100 percent rate starting from April 1st.
“With effect from Saturday, April 1, bus fare on all regulated buses — BRT, standard, and FLM — shall revert to 100 percent rate,” the agency said.
“Lagos state governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, had on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, approved a 50% slash in bus fares following the cash crunch brought about by the recent currency swap.
“Following the supreme court and federal government’s pronouncements on the use of old notes alongside the new notes and return of stability to the system, the 50% rebate is hereby discontinued.”
