The Cross River Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has taken steps to address the internal disagreements within its ranks in the state by setting up a committee on reconciliation and discipline. In a statement issued by the party’s Chairman in the state, Mr Ogar Osim, on Wednesday in Calabar, the move is aimed at restoring peace and unity to the party.
It is worth noting that before the governorship election in Cross River on March 18, some LP members dissatisfied with the party’s choice of Mr Ogar Osim as the governorship candidate had thrown their weight behind Senator Sandy Onor, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In response to this development, the LP has decided to set up a 13-member committee, with Mr Alvin Ochang as its chairman. The committee will include representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The mandate of the committee will take effect immediately, as the LP believes that restoring peace and unity within the party cannot be further delayed.
The LP’s decision to establish a committee on reconciliation and discipline demonstrates its commitment to addressing the internal issues that have been threatening its unity. With the involvement of stakeholders such as the NLC and TUC, it is expected that the committee will take an impartial approach to resolving the disputes and reconciling all parties concerned. The LP is hopeful that the committee’s efforts will help to restore confidence and trust within its ranks, and position the party for success in future elections.
