Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has claimed that there is a plot to use Nigeria’s cash crisis and fuel scarcity to disrupt the upcoming election and establish an Interim National Government led by a retired army general.
In a state broadcast on Wednesday night, the Governor alleged that the currency redesign policy was intended to perpetuate the scarcity of fuel, food, and other necessities, leading to mass protests, violence, and anarchy that would provide a conducive environment for a military takeover.
According to El-Rufai, this policy was devised to ensure that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate would be deprived of a supposed colossal war chest. He added that the Central Bank of Nigeria and other disgruntled federal officials had convinced the President that it was acceptable to deprive citizens of their hard-earned money and starve them if necessary, while small and medium-sized enterprises were denied access to their capital, resulting in the cessation of trade and exchange.
The Governor also called on the government to allow the old notes to circulate concurrently with the new ones, appealing for a modification of the policy to avoid the unintended consequences.
