Unai Emery has finally been officially announced as the new manager of Villarreal as the former coach Javi Calleja was sacked.
Emery has been unemployed since he was relieved of his duties as Arsenal manager. Unai Emery has officially been announced as the new manager of La Liga club Villarreal. The Yellow submarines in an official statement confirmed that former boss Javi Calleja was relieved of his duties despite having an impressive 2019-20 season.
Villarreal finished in an impressive fifth position at the end of the campaign, booking their place in next season’s Europa League.
However, Emery also seems like a good choice for Villareal. The 48 year-old has a pedigree in Europe’s elite competitions winning the Europa League with Sevilla in three consecutive seasons including 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 respectively. In his two seasons in charge of French club Paris Saint-Germain, he won the Ligue 1 twice and the Cup on double occasions. Emery also led Arsenal to the 2018-19 Europa League finals but lost out to Premier League rivals Chelsea by 4-1.
