IG Launches Crackdown on Illegal Naira Note Sales

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Usman Baba, has mandated strict adherence to the CBN Act, 2007, which criminalizes the sale and hawking of Naira notes. This directive was confirmed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, through a statement released in Abuja on Friday.

As per the provisions of Sections 20 and 21 of the CBN Act, 2007, the I-G has ordered the arrest and prosecution of anyone involved in the sale or abuse of the Naira notes released by the Central Bank of Nigeria. In addition, Baba has instructed all Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners in charge of Commands and Formations to enforce the CBN Act fully.

To support this initiative, the I-G has also placed the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Force Intelligence Bureau on high alert and tasked the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau with implementing the order.

Baba explained that this directive is in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to preserve the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007 and to elevate the value of Nigeria’s currency. He also emphasized the responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force to enforce all laws and regulations, regardless of the enabling Acts of other security agencies.

The I-G has called upon the public to support the Nigeria Police Force in upholding the CBN Act and bringing violators to justice.
