Gunmen attacked the convoy of Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator representing the Anambra south senatorial district.
The attack was said to have taken place on Sunday at Nkwo Enugu Ukwu, Njikoka LGA of Anambra state.
Some policemen and his aides were killed during the attack. The senator, Mr. Ubah, reportedly escaped the attack but sustained injuries.
The gunmen were said to have ambushed and opened fire on the convoy, killing a yet-to-be-confirmed number of police officers attached to the lawmaker.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra confirmed the attack.
He said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Echeng Echeng had already led operatives to the scene of the attack around the Nkwo Enugwu Ukwu market area.
The PPRO said though details of the incident were still sketchy, operatives were on the ground while the situation was being monitored.
He said that further details would be communicated to the public.
