On Tuesday, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State visited Sagamu to assess the damage caused to several commercial banks in the area. He described the incident as “daylight robbery and arson” and noted that the violence went beyond a mere protest against the scarcity of naira notes in the country.
The governor, accompanied by State Police Commissioner Frank Mbah, Brigade Commander Brigadier General Mohammed Aminu, and Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland Oba Adewale Ajayi, spoke with journalists and offered rewards to anyone with credible information about the perpetrators.
Abiodun stated that the violent protest was criminal in nature and had political undertones. He expressed sympathy to those affected by the incident and vowed to uphold his responsibility to protect the lives and properties of everyone in Ogun State.
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the violence had motives beyond the shortage of naira notes. The governor described the incident as arson and armed robbery, perpetrated under the guise of a protest. He attributed the violence to the opposition party’s desperation ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Abiodun emphasized the need to smoke out the perpetrators and their sponsors and urged the public to come forward with any credible information. He assured the people of Ogun State that security measures had been put in place to ensure peaceful and non-violent elections.
