A recent new
s report has revealed that the Global Network for Sustainable Development has spoken out against the trending audio leak of a private telephone conversation between Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, and Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church. In a statement by the group’s convener, Philip Roberts, the leak was deemed illegal and a violation of privacy.
Roberts went on to point out that Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended), clearly states that every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to their privacy, whether it be in their homes or communications with others via letters, telephones, or telegraphs. This protection is guaranteed by the Constitution, and the group believes that the leak was a malicious, callous, and criminal breach of confidentiality.
In light of this, Roberts urged Obi to press charges against those behind the leaked audio, stating that the perpetrators are liable to criminal prosecution. He further alleged that the leak was a politically motivated blackmail attempt orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to divert attention away from their controversial victory at the presidential poll.
“The purported leaked audio conversation has APC’s blackmail mill written all over it. It is a shame that a party that claimed to have won an electoral victory has resorted to underhand practices and cheap blackmail against a purported loser instead of defending their purchased victory in court,” Roberts declared.
Moreover, the group expressed its outrage at Femi Fani-Kayode’s call to security agencies to “declare Obi a master terrorist” for allegedly describing the election as “a religious war.” This statement by Fani-Kayode was seen as an attempt to further discredit Obi and cast him in a negative light.
In conclusion, the Global Network for Sustainable Development believes that the leaked audio conversation was a violation of Obi’s privacy and that those responsible for the leak should be held accountable. The group urges Nigerian authorities to take swift action to protect citizens’ right to privacy and prevent further breaches from occurring in the future.
