Singer Opens Up About Being Displaced by Flood and Her Absence from the Music Scene
Ajoke Cinderella, a once-prominent Fuji musician, has shared her emotional story of becoming homeless after a devastating flood displaced her from her home in the Ojokoro area of Lagos. The mother of two, who has recently seen her old stage performances trend on social media, recounted the challenges she has faced since parting ways with her former music promoter.
Speaking about the difficult experience, Cinderella recalled returning from a trip to London in 2011, only to be hit by a heavy downpour that led to the flooding of her home. “There was a heavy rain, and we were already asleep. When we woke up, I discovered that some of my belongings were floating in the water,” she explained. Despite spending a significant amount of money to construct a German floor to prevent future flooding, her efforts were unsuccessful. Faced with no other option, Cinderella decided to leave the house with her children.
Cinderella also addressed her absence from the mainstream music scene, attributing it to God’s will. She remains optimistic, believing that her career’s pause is part of a bigger plan. “People don’t regard me as they used to. They greet me, and I greet them back. It’s the timing of God, so what can I do?” she said, expressing her resilience and determination to continue creating music despite the challenges.
She further shared her coping mechanism for dealing with negative comments, saying, “I don’t feel bad because if I listen to what people say, I might become suicidal. Anyone who wants to go far must ignore negative comments.” Cinderella remains hopeful about her future, adding, “I know I’ll get back on my feet and become famous again because I haven’t given up. I still perform at shows and compose music regularly.”
