Bayern Munich’s coach during the 2018/2019 season Nico Kovac has been appointed as Wolfsburg manager after the club has had two coaches in one season, being the 2021/2022 season. Mark Van Bommel was appointed as manager last summer but was relieved of his duties and then came Florian Kohelfdt who was brought on board to save the club from relegation.
Kohfeldt finished in 12th, five positions away from the red zone, and marked the Wolves safe. However, he has mutually agreed with the club to step down as caretaker manager and this occurred when the Bundesliga season came to an end. Kohfeldt has now been replaced by the Croatian tactician who knows a thing or two about the German Bundesliga.
The 50-year-old coach signed a three-year contract with Wolfsburg, with the deal seeing him take charge of proceedings till June 2025. Kovac has also been met well by members of the board who intend to put this torrid season behind them and start next season on a fresh page. Kovac has the full backing of the directors and the former Croatia international is ready to roll up his sleeves and set to work in a few weeks’ time as they return to training in July for pre-season.
”I’m a child of the Bundesliga and I am very eager and motivated to start another chapter with Wolves,” he said. Nico Kovac has brought a breath of fresh air and he is very much looking forward to kickstarting the affairs of the club after the holidays. Kovac is well-versed when it comes to playing in the Bundesliga and he has had stints at Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha BSC, Hamburg, and Bayern Munich.
He began his senior coaching career when he qualified Croatia for the 2014 FIFA World Cup that was held in Brazil. The manager gained popularity at Frankfurt when he made two back-to-back cup finals, winning the trophy in 2018 at the expense of Bayern Munich. He won the Bundesliga title in the 2018/19 season as well as the DFB Cup, making three consecutive finals and winning two.
