Nigeria’s Flamingos have defeated Germany to win a bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.
The Nigerian ladies won a nail-biting penalty shoot-out against Germany 3-2 on Sunday 30th October, after their 3-3 draw and subsequent 120 minutes had forced the need for penalties.
Despite trailing Germany three-to-one, it looked like the Flamingos were going to take the win. Then, they came up with an improbable comeback.
The first goal was scored by Opeyemi Ajakaye in the 20th minute and the second goal by Aminat Bello was scored in the 48th minute. Etim Edidiong’s third goal, scored in the 63rd minute, evened up the score before Germany replied with three goals to send 35 minutes of play to a penalty shoot out.
One of the African teams, the Flamingos, won penalty kicks 3-2 in a penalty shootout and became the second African team to clinch a bronze medal in the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
