Still basking in the publicity that has come with her two recent music videos, singer Selena Gomez gets candid in an interview session with Apple Music about what inspired her latest album and how she has stopped being afraid of expressing herself.
The videos for Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now have attracted a lot of attention and scrutiny from fans and critics as it wasn’t hard to figure out that they were based on her tumultuous relationship with singer Justin Bieber.
Now, the famous musician has opened up about her experiences, saying that she wanted to take what she had learned from the previous album and turn it into something even better.
She revealed that she had been in therapy for years and had to take several breaks and that this year. Everything had just started pouring out of her. That made her get the feeling that she had to be authentic in her new album as saying anything else would have negated that.
“I have spent years living in fear of speaking up”, says Gomez, in a revelation that saw her open up about being a people-pleaser. She stated that being that way had stopped her from saying things but she has recently stopped caring.
Responding to how a young artist like her finds herself in the whirlwind of fast-paced pop culture, the singer cited influences from her parents; her mum was in theater and had a huge music library and was also involved in a lot of things at the same time while her dad was a DJ. Under their care, she had experienced “the beautiful colours of music”.
On working on Lose You To Love Me, Gomez says she got to a point where she realized that her life had become a story and wasn’t happy with that because what she was going through was very real to her. That spurred her to stop being afraid to share how she feels.
She further revealed that her family and close friends were so proud of her when they got to know about the track as they had stood by her during her trying moments and were glad to see her move past them.
She said she was interested in doing a song that dealt with vulnerability; by implication, she could be knocked down repeatedly but she would never ever be vulnerable.
She says that one of the worst moments of her life ended up being the biggest blessing she’s ever had and she has been set free.
It’s good to see Selena Gomez rise above the ashes of her troubles and reassert her talent and creativity in her latest releases. Let’s hope to keep more of that from her.
