Osimhen’s Late Goal Secures Crucial Point for Nigeria
Super Eagles caretaker coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has expressed his thoughts following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match held in Abidjan on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles were forced to come from behind to salvage a point, with Mohammed Tijani putting Benin ahead in the 16th minute. Nigeria’s equalizer came late in the game when star striker Victor Osimhen struck eight minutes before the final whistle.
Reflecting on the match, Eguavoen commended his team’s fighting spirit. “It was a tough game and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equaliser,” he told thenff.com.
He highlighted the challenging weather conditions, noting that heavy rainfall made it difficult for both teams to execute their game plans effectively. “The downpour made the game difficult for both teams, but I am happy we have the AFCON finals ticket in the bag ahead of the final game of the series against Rwanda in Uyo on Monday,” he added.
The Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament is already secured, providing a morale boost ahead of their final qualifying fixture. The draw against Benin maintains Nigeria’s momentum as they prepare to round off the campaign with a clash against Rwanda.
