Manchester United have agreed to pay veteran Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani £20million to move to Old Trafford.

United opened talks with the 33-year-old former Paris St Germain and Napoli forward during the week after deciding that Borussia Dortmund’s £107million asking price for Jadon Sancho is too rich.

High-level sources at United confirmed on Saturday that negotiations went well and Cavani is now expected to sign a two-year contract worth £200,000-a-week.

Cavani became a free agent after leaving PSG at the end of the season.

He won six French titles in seven years in Paris and will bring a wealth of experience to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s young squad.

United’s swoop for Cavani comes with the club growing increasingly desperate to add quality to the team.

Dortmund’s refusal to budge on their valuation of Sancho saw them turn initially to Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

Their bid to seal a loan move was rebuffed, but Barca were willing to sell the Frenchman for a cut-price £60million.

United’s decision to turn their attentions to Canavi suggests they are buying themselves another 12 months before returning to Dortmund for Sancho.

Cavani moved to Europe in 2007 when he joined Palermo.

He then enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Napoli before PSG paid £55million for his services in 2013.

Cavani also helped his country win the Copa America during an international career that has brought 116 caps.
