Real name Nwachukwu Chinagorom but popularly known as DJ Sexy Spin is a top buzzing female disc jockey in Africa right now. Born and raised in Lagos, DJ Sexy Spin started DJing at Yaba in 2009, learning some skills from DJ Kool Jay who was then the personal DJ to 9ice, Coded Tunes and Olamide. She took it up professionally in 2010.
“All 9ice’s videos and Olamide’s, we would always go for the shoots to set up the sounds and the dj equipment”, Sexy reminisces. She finally evolved in 2011 to run things on her own.
DJ Sexy Spin got the opportunity to leave Nigeria in March 2016 courtesy Club HypnoticA. The club had heard about the DJ as she was making wave here in Nigeria. She took part at the Top Radio 90.9 DJ Competition in 2012, emerged 4th and the only female. Sexy Spin had played at the Lagos Carnival in 2013, 2014 and 2015 consecutively prior to her leaving for Kenya. She also worked partly for Expoze Nigeria.
Expressing her experience while performing with the likes of Jidenna, Davido, Wizkid, Iyanya and few others, Sexy Spin says ‘Davido was very impressed ’cause I was the first to play his IF Remix with R. Kelly which was released that same day. He even gave me a bottle of Belaire.”
“Jidenna said I should come sit with him, that was when I told him we’re from the same state, same local government in Imo state, Nigeria”.
“Wizkid didn’t stand up to dance until I got to the decks. ‘Cause I played his favorite Fela songs, I went old school on him”
Right now, DJ Sexy Spin works fully with BClub Nairobi, one of the biggest clubs in Kenya that has played host to A-list African and International celebrities. Aside from that, she occasionally gets to disc for some Nigerians over there in Kenya.
“Sometimes the Nigerians here invite me to come disc for them. I can’t say no, it’s extra cash”
“And the good thing is, they ready to pay any amount you name ’cause they understand the value I’m offering. Besides, we’re just two Naija DJs in Kenya.”
“It’s not like in Naija when you invite one DJ, he calls his price and you say no then go get another DJ”
“Here, even the Kenyans and foreigners ask for Naija music. They don’t wanna dance to their own songs again. If they don’t ask for Davido, they will ask for Wizkid, Tekno etc. When you play hip-hop for 30mins, they will tell you, ‘please play Naija’. They don’t even call it Afro beats here. *laughs* they call it Naija”
