Nigerian singer, Oladapo Oyebanji Dbanj, popularly known as Dbanj has reportedly been arrested and detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC) in Abuja.
He was arrested and detained on Tuesday after ICPC operatives closed in on him, forcing him to surrender himself at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
He is accused of fraudulently diverting hundreds of thousands of naira from the government meant to empower youths under the N-Power project, an empowerment programme set up by the Nigerian government in 2016 to address youth unemployment and increase social development.
It was alleged that Dbanj had conspired with corrupt government officials to introduce ghost beneficiaries into the payroll of the funds. The monies were later traced to Dbanj’s account.
Investigators allege that he conspired with some compromised government officials to introduce ghost beneficiaries into the payroll of the scheme. The stipend paid to those beneficiaries was later traced to Dbanj’s account.
He had been ignoring a summons to defend fraudulent claims against him for many weeks and claiming to be outside the country on concerts.
After he failed to show up for interrogation to honour his summons, the ICPC moved to arrest him anywhere in Nigeria and abroad, forcing him to show up at the commission’s office on Tuesday.
On arrival, D’banj was subjected to a prolonged interrogation session after which he was detained.
His plea for bail was also rejected after he was subjected to a long interrogation. It was said that he could not be trusted to show up at his own trial if his bail was granted.
