Nigerian afrobeat and dancehall star, Davido, has opened up about his anxieties surrounding the release of his latest album, “Timeless”.
During an appearance on the +44 podcast, Davido revealed that he felt this album was his last chance to deliver a successful project.
The 17-track album, which features collaborations with several other artists, was released earlier this year.
However, Davido admitted that he was worried about how it would be received. “This is me telling myself the truth; this album was either going to make me or break me. People don’t want to say it to me to my face.
“But everybody knows the truth about the situation that is happening in their life whether they want to lie to them or not,” he said.
To cope with his anxiety, Davido told his team to leave one hour before the album’s release, prayed, and then went to sleep. When he woke up over three hours later, he panicked because he didn’t see any celebration for his album.
“I sent everybody away an hour before the album came out, I did my prayers, I laid down on my bed, and slept. I now overslept. I wanted to just sleep for like one hour thirty minutes so that we will celebrate. I now overslept. Woke up by 3 am. I said ‘Ye!’.
“I was looking for my phone because I have a big suite. I went to the living room, but there wasn’t anybody in my room celebrating. I was scared like ‘wetin dey happen na?’. So, I ran downstairs and I banged on my assistant’s door ‘What’s going on, what’s going on?’. He said ‘Oga, take your phone, congratulations’.”
Davido’s latest album has been well received by both fans and critics, with many praising his ability to merge afrobeat and dancehall music seamlessly. Despite his fears, the album’s success has solidified Davido’s position as one of Nigeria’s biggest and most influential musicians.
