Lagos, Nigeria – In a recent revelation, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced its capability to provide ample petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel, to meet the demands of consumers within Nigeria. The company’s Fact Sheet, obtained by Energy Vanguard, showcases its capacity to fulfill 100% of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, with surplus products available for export.
According to the statement, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is specifically designed to process 100% Nigerian Crude, with the flexibility to handle other types of crude oil. The refinery boasts a self-sufficient marine facility, enabling optimized freight operations. In fact, it holds the record for the largest single order of five Single Point Mooring systems (SPMs) worldwide. Furthermore, the diesel and gasoline products produced by the refinery conform to Euro V specifications, ensuring adherence to stringent international standards.
The refinery’s design adheres to environmental norms set by the World Bank, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), European emission standards, and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent guidelines. It utilizes state-of-the-art technology and is capable of processing a wide variety of crude oils, including several African and Middle Eastern crudes, as well as the US Light Tight Oil.
To ensure resilience against potential sea level rise due to global warming, the project involved an extensive sand dredging operation, costing approximately Euros 300 million. With the use of the world’s largest dredgers, the height of the refinery was elevated by 1.5 meters, safeguarding it from the impact of rising sea levels.
Recognizing the need to enhance local capacity, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has acquired over 1,209 units of various equipment, augmenting the capabilities of local contractors to handle site works. Additionally, 332 cranes have been purchased to bolster equipment installation capacity, addressing the inadequacy of Nigeria’s current capacity in this regard.
Furthermore, the project encompasses the construction of the world’s largest granite quarry, enabling the supply of coarse aggregate, stone column material, stone base, stone dust, and breakwater materials. With an annual production capacity of 10 million tonnes, the quarry significantly contributes to the project’s requirements.
In terms of transportation infrastructure, a dedicated port has been developed, featuring two quays with a load-bearing capacity of 25 tonnes per square meter. This enables the transportation of Over Dimensional Cargoes in close proximity to the site. Additionally, two more quays have been constructed at the port, capable of handling Panamax vessels for the export of fertilizer, petrochemicals, and liquid cargoes. With a total of six quays, including a Roll-on/Roll-off facility, the port facilitates efficient logistics operations.
During the civil works phase, an impressive 700 piles were drilled daily, resulting in a total of 250,000 piles for the project. The refinery also boasts 177 tanks, with a collective capacity of 4.742 billion liters. The loading capacity for tankers stands at a total of 2,900, based on a tanker capacity of 33,000 liters. Notably, Dangote Petroleum Refinery is one of the few companies globally to undertake the complete Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for both a petroleum refinery and petrochemical complex.
This ambitious project required the coordination of various local and international suppliers, as well as multi-cultural work teams. The Dangote Refinery Plant, considered a legacy project, is set to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy, with an expected annual revenue of $21 billion.
