Former Real Madrid, Juventus, and Manchester United forward, Cristiano Ronaldo broke a record and extended another in the Euro 2024 qualification match between Portugal and Liechtenstein on Thursday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo who has a difficult 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was expected to hang his boots in international football after the tournament, but Portugal’s new head coach Roberto Martinez decided to invite him for the international break in March.
Ahead of Portugal vs Liechtenstein Euro 2024 qualifiers on Thursday, Ronaldo had the joint most international appearances in history. He shared the record with Kuwait forward Bader Al-Mutawa on 196 caps.
Hence, an appearance against Liechtenstein would push him a cap ahead of the retired forward. Fortunately, coach Martinez gave Ronaldo the starting shirt which was enough to make him the most capped footballer in international football. He has now played a record 197 times for Portugal.
