The Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating a couple (names withheld) who orchestrated their own kidnapping and demanded five million naira ransom. According to reports, the husband, a 53-year-old technician, and his wife, a 48-year-old body massager and bone setter, were arrested by the police on Wednesday and Thursday respectively after a family member of the man reported the purported kidnapping.
The couple reportedly planned the self-kidnap to raise N3 million to buy back their house in the Badagry area of Lagos. They admitted to the crime and claimed that the husband brought the idea and sold it to his wife. They texted their relatives that they were kidnapped and demanded a ransom.
The husband claimed that he organized the self-kidnap because none of his siblings were willing to assist him financially, and he wanted to re-buy his house back with the ransom money. The police visited the couple’s house in Badagry and found the wife and their three children living there. The woman was asked to follow the police to the headquarters, but she requested to come the next day, which was granted. When she showed up as promised, she was arrested for self-kidnap, and her husband was arrested the following day.
The police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed their arrest on Saturday and noted that the investigation was still ongoing. He also advised the public against resorting to crime to solve their financial problems, stating that the law would always catch up with offenders.
