A prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has unleashed a wave of criticism against Lloyd Ekweremadu, the son of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, for hosting an extravagant wedding event in the midst of his parents’ incarceration in the United Kingdom.
Lloyd Ekweremadu exchanged vows with Tiffany Adaobi Obinna-Uzor in a lavish ceremony held at the resplendent Basilica of Grace, Anglican Communion, situated within Abuja’s Gudu District this past Saturday.
Igbokwe took to his Facebook platform to express his disapproval of the opulent affair, asserting that the former Senator’s son exhibited a lack of sensitivity towards his imprisoned parents’ plight. The APC stalwart contended that Lloyd Ekweremadu should have opted for a more modest and frugal wedding celebration, reserving the grandeur for a future occasion when his parents would be free from their current predicament.
Currently, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, find themselves serving sentences in a UK penitentiary. Their conviction stemmed from their involvement in an organ trafficking scheme, wherein they attempted to procure an organ transplant for their ailing daughter, Sonia. The London court found them guilty in May, along with an accomplice identified as Dr. Obinna Obeta, who sought to facilitate the illicit organ harvest from David Ukpo Nwamini, a young individual trafficked from Lagos to London.
The imposed sentences underscore the gravity of the situation, as Ike Ekweremadu received a sentence of nine years and eight months, while his wife, Beatrice, was handed a four-year-and-six-month term. Dr. Obinna Obeta faced the most severe penalty, sentenced to a decade behind bars.
Reflecting on the backdrop of their son’s extravagant nuptial celebrations, Joe Igbokwe remarked, “Were I in Ekweremadu’s son’s position, I would have refrained from staging such an ostentatious wedding while my parents remain incarcerated.”
“I would have opted for an understated matrimonial affair and awaited my parents’ eventual liberation. The values of this generation deeply trouble me,” Igbokwe added, revealing his apprehensions about the trends within contemporary society.
As the wedding festivities draw to a close, the event has been marred by the complex dynamics surrounding Lloyd Ekweremadu’s decision to proceed with the celebration amid his parents’ legal battle and imprisonment.
