The Lagos State government has given the green light for Chrisland High School, Opebi branch, to resume learning activities ahead of the school’s forthcoming examinations, after it was closed following the death of a 12-year-old student, Whitney Adeniran. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered the closure of the school on March 3, 2023, to allow for an investigation into the incident. The closure of the school was also intended to give all stakeholders, including parents, students, staff, and friends of the deceased, time to grieve.
An autopsy was conducted by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on February 15, in the presence of a consultant pathologist from the deceased’s family and one representing Chrisland Schools. The report, dated March 1, revealed that the cause of death was asphyxia and electrocution. The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice subsequently directed that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions issue legal advice on the matter.
Despite the ongoing criminal proceedings, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, announced on Monday evening that students in terminal classes have been granted permission to access the Opebi branch of Chrisland High School to begin physical learning ahead of their exams, following an appeal by parents. This move shows that the government is committed to ensuring that students are not unduly affected by the tragic incident and can continue their education.
