Singer reveals close bond with Tyna Onwudiwe, shares personal stories.
Maverick Nigerian singer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has opened up about his relationship with the late singer Tyna Onwudiwe, revealing that they were once close to getting married. Charly Boy made this disclosure while addressing long-standing rumors that he fathered some of Onwudiwe’s children.
In his recollection, Charly Boy explained, “I almost married Tyna. One day, we sat down and talked about it. I said, oh, no, I don’t see myself marrying two wives. And by the way, if we get married, we will kill ourselves. Let’s be good friends. And we became the best of all friends.”
Describing Tyna as a generous and selfless person, he added, “Tyna was such a beautiful soul. She would give her last penny to a stranger. That was who she always was.”
The singer also shared how people often teased him by referring to Onwudiwe as his wife. “People used to tease me by calling her my wife. They said, your wife has cancer. I wanted somebody, a female, to help me in that. Because if I was doing it on my own, people will say, of course, is she not your girlfriend? Is she not your wife? In fact, some of her kids, people think they’re my kids,” he noted.
Charly Boy recalled how he helped raise funds for Tyna Onwudiwe during her battle with cancer, but sadly, the illness claimed her life. Onwudiwe passed away on June 29, 2001, just 17 days after her 47th birthday.
The late Tyna Onwudiwe was a well-known singer and activist in Nigeria, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew her.
