University Pays Tribute to Former Athlete and Record Holder
Shelby Daniele, a standout track and field athlete who made her mark at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), has passed away, the university confirmed in a statement on Friday. Cal Poly’s athletic department shared the news on Instagram, expressing deep sadness over the loss of the former star, describing her as an athlete with a “remarkable heart.” The cause of her death has not been revealed.
Daniele, who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cal Poly, was an exceptional track athlete. She served as the team captain and was a six-time All-Big West honoree, as well as a two-time Big West champion. Daniele still holds the school record for the indoor 200m with a time of 24.69 seconds and ranks highly in the school’s 60m and 100m indoor races.
Her death comes just months after she celebrated earning her master’s degree in agriculture, posing proudly with her family at her graduation in June. According to her LinkedIn profile, Daniele aimed to make a positive impact on the environment and give back to society through her work in agriculture.
Daniele’s passing has left a profound impact on the Cal Poly community, as tributes continue to pour in from those who admired her achievements on and off the track.
