Nigerian Cross-Dresser Claims Injury During Arrest, Denies Bribing Officials
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted bail to Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, following a controversial arrest at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The cross-dresser, en route to London, was stopped by officials while boarding a KLM flight on Thursday night.
In the hours following his arrest, Bobrisky took to social media, calling for public support. “Nigerians, help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he posted, adding that he sustained injuries during the confrontation. Following his detention in Lagos, he was transferred to EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he was questioned over allegations related to bribery.
The incident drew significant attention, especially after a voice note circulated on social media, allegedly from Bobrisky himself, claiming he paid a N15 million bribe to EFCC officers to drop money laundering charges against him. The voice note was shared by Martins Otse, a social critic known as VeryDarkMan, sparking widespread debate online.
Bobrisky secured his release on Friday night after meeting bail conditions, according to information obtained by Sunday PUNCH. Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed the release on Saturday but declined to comment further on the case.
Meanwhile, a source close to the investigation said Bobrisky denied any bribery in his formal statement to the commission. The source revealed that Bobrisky challenged Otse, who posted the audio, to substantiate the claims. “He denied everything about releasing money to any official as a bribe to drop the money laundering charges against him. He said the fellow who posted the voice note should come over to justify it. He said nobody requested money from him in the EFCC and he didn’t give anyone anything,” the source stated.
