Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have re-elected Professor Emmanuel Osodeke as the national president for another two-year term.
The much-anticipated election took place during the 22nd national delegates conference of the union, held at the prestigious University of Jos (UNIJOS) from May 19 to 21.
The event witnessed a remarkable turnout of distinguished academics and delegates from universities across the nation.
Osodeke’s re-election signifies a vote of confidence in his leadership and his unwavering commitment to championing the rights and welfare of university staff in Nigeria. A renowned lecturer at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia state, Osodeke first assumed the presidency in May 2021, following the ASUU national delegates conference held in Awka, Anambra state.
During his tenure, Osodeke spearheaded the ASUU’s notable efforts in advocating for increased funding for Nigerian universities and the improvement of lecturers’ welfare. Notably, under his leadership, the union embarked on an unprecedented eight-month strike in 2022, demanding urgent attention to the dire state of the country’s higher education system.
The recently concluded ASUU election also resulted in the appointment of Chris Piwuna, a distinguished consultant psychiatrist and associate professor at the University of Jos, as the vice president of the union.
Furthermore, several national officers of the union were re-elected to their positions, including Siji Sowande as treasurer, Ade Adejumo as financial secretary, Austen Sado as investment secretary, and Adamu Babayo as internal auditor.
Notably, Aisha Bawa emerged as the newly elected welfare secretary, replacing Stella-Maris Okey in this crucial role.
ASUU’s delegates conference served as a platform for rigorous discussions and deliberations on pertinent issues affecting the Nigerian higher education system.
