In a grand display of security measures, armed personnel from the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Security (DSS), among others, took control of Tarawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Monday. The square, located in Lagos Island, served as the venue for the highly anticipated inauguration ceremony of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
Despite a slight rainfall, the security personnel faced the arduous task of managing the overwhelming crowd that clamored for entry into the venue. The situation necessitated their utmost vigilance in ensuring order and preventing any untoward incidents.
By 9:58 AM, the square was abuzz with dignitaries and esteemed guests, eagerly anticipating the arrival of Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Hamzat. The vibrant atmosphere showcased a display of colors and enthusiasm, setting the stage for the commencement of the momentous event.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s ascension to power came as a result of a resounding victory in the 2019 Lagos State gubernatorial election. He defeated his opponent, Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a landslide victory. Subsequently, on March 9, 2019, he was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Lagos State at TBS, Lagos Island.
Remarkably, Sanwo-Olu achieved yet another electoral triumph in the recently concluded March 9, 2023 governorship election, securing a second term in office. This time, he triumphed over Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) and Dr. Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who finished as the third runner-up.
At precisely 11:32 AM, Governor Sanwo-Olu was sworn in by Justice Opeyemi Oke, the Chief Judge of Lagos State. The crowd erupted in cheers as the Governor’s deputy, Dr. Hamzat, took the oath of office, solidifying the start of their joint leadership.
The inauguration ceremony held at TBS served as a testament to the vibrant democracy in Lagos State. The atmosphere was charged with hope and anticipation as the new administration prepared to embark on its journey of governance, promising progress and prosperity for the people of Lagos State.
